For prospective undergrads researchers
We accept new student researchers into the lab at the beginning of each semester (including summer), and we require students to attend a training boot camp before classes begin. We also require students to have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and be able to commit to at least 6 hours a week during semesters and 15 hours a week in the summer. It is recommended (but not required) that you have also taken Genetics and/or Organic Evolution.
As a student researcher in my lab, you may be trained in a number of tasks, including fly handling, fly maintenance, basic fly biology, dissection, sample preparation (fixing and staining slides), microscopy, data collection, and hopefully data analysis and presentation (usually poster format). We also have projects that involve molecular work (DNA and RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis) and bioinformatics (analyzing high-throughput sequence data and characterizing candidate genes using GO analysis). You will also have the opportunity, if your schedule allows, to attend lab meetings where we discuss current research and training issues as well as recent primary literature articles.
If you'd like to join the group, contact Dr. Manier at manier@gwu.edu with your resume or CV and your unofficial transcript.
